Jerry Heller (October 6, 1940 – September 2, 2016) was an American music manager and businessman. He is best known for his role in the emergence of West Coast hip hop and his management of influential rap groups like N.W.A and Eazy-E.
Before his foray into hip hop, Heller had a long career in the music industry, managing rock and pop acts such as Journey, Marvin Gaye, and REO Speedwagon. In the mid-1980s, he recognized the potential of the burgeoning Los Angeles hip hop scene.
In 1986, Heller co-founded Ruthless%20Records with Eazy-E. As a manager and business partner, he played a key role in launching the careers of N.W.A. and other West Coast rappers, helping to bring gangsta rap to a mainstream audience. However, his business practices and compensation arrangements were often criticized, leading to tension and eventually a rift within N.W.A. and Ruthless Records.
After the disbandment of N.W.A. and the death of Eazy-E, Heller continued to work in the music industry. His legacy remains controversial due to the accusations of financial mismanagement and exploitation that plagued his relationship with the artists he represented. He authored an autobiography titled Ruthless: A Memoir.
Heller's portrayal in the 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton sparked further controversy, with Heller disputing the accuracy of the film's depiction of him and his business dealings. He filed a lawsuit against the film's producers, alleging defamation.
